Headstone preservation project

For many years, the Old Saltillo Cemetery Board of Directors has overseen the monument preservation activities of the cemetery by focusing on the oldest monuments in the cemetery which have sustained damage or have otherwise been compromised by time, weather and other elements.  Sandstone and marble monuments are particularly susceptible to erosion.  The Board makes every effort to preserve the cemetery’s original stones through the use of adhesives, braces, concrete molds and bases, etc.  Additionally, the Board has approved the use of Association funds to install supplemental monuments bearing the inscriptions of the original markers.  Made of granite, these more durable monuments preserve names, dates and epitaphs for many years to come.  In recent years, limited investment earnings have constrained efforts to proactively preserve monuments.  Rather, the Board only acts to stabilize or repair monuments in immediate need of attention.  As investment earnings improve or as earmarked funds are received for this purpose, monument preservation activities will resume.

Our hope is that these can be preserved while the inscriptions are still legible to continue the legacy and heritage of those who have gone before.
